Media Contact for AG Campbell Issues Consumer Alert For 23andMe Customers
Sydney Heiberger, Press Secretary
BOSTON — Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea Joy Campbell has issued a consumer alert for 23andMe customers, reminding them of the importance of protecting their personal data. 23andMe is a direct-to-consumer genetic testing company that collects and analyzes genetic codes through DNA sampling to trace ancestry, identify health risks, and more.
The company has filed for bankruptcy and announced intentions to sell its assets. Due to the high volume of sensitive consumer information, including genetic data the company has obtained, AG Campbell is reminding consumers that they can reach out to 23andMe and request that the company delete their personal data and destroy any DNA samples held by the company.
AG Campbell encourages consumers to take the following steps to delete their data from 23andMe:
- Go to 23andMe.com and log into your account.
- Navigate to the “Settings” tab.
- Scroll down to a section titled “23andMe Data” at the bottom of the page.
- Click the “View” button.
- If you want to save a copy of your genetic data, choose the option to download your data to your device before proceeding with next steps.
- Scroll down to “Delete Data.”
- Select “Permanently Delete Data.”
- You will receive a confirmation email from 23andMe; follow the link to confirm your deletion request.
Consumers may also delete any saved saliva samples by navigating to the “Preferences” section on their account settings page.
Customers who previously consented to 23andMe or third-party researchers to use genetic data or DNA samples for research are able to withdraw consent by navigating to the “Research and Product Consents” section of the account settings page.
Those with additional questions should call 23andMe’s customer service line at 800-239-5230 or navigate to their Customer Care online page.
AG Campbell encourages Massachusetts 23andMe customers to contact her office with concerns or issues, or if have not heard back from the company within 1-2 days. Consumers may file a Consumer Complaint online, or by calling (617) 727-8400.
