Airspace reviews determine whether a construction or alteration project will obstruct the safe-altitude boundaries of a runway or airport, or otherwise interfere with a pilot’s ability to fly safely.
Some examples of possible obstructions:
- Cranes
- Wind turbines
- Tall buildings, lights, flags or utility poles
- Solar panels
You must request a MassDOT Aeronautics Airspace Review if your external construction or alteration project is within two miles of a public-use airport and:
- is taller than 20 feet above ground level, or
- includes a solar panel installation
The glare from solar panels can interfere with visibility. Find more information about solar panel safety in the FAA Solar Guide.
Depending on the specifications of your project, you may also have to file for a Federal Aviation Administration Obstruction Evaluation/Airport Airspace Analysis (OE/AAA). More information is available on the FAA Website.
