What you need   for Submit Plans for Approval to Operate Self-Service Gas Stations

New self-service gas stations must submit plans and get approvals from the Office of the State Fire Marshal.

Existing self-service gas stations must submit a complete new application if they are going to:

  • Replace the fire suppression system.
  • Change the method of dispensing fuel. For example, changing from SPDs to MPDs.
  • Replace or reconstruct the dispensing island.
  • Make a material change in environmental conditions or hazard area.

  2. Submitting Plans for Review

    Submit four copies of the plans (24 X 36", single page, non-reproducible blueprints) marked as:

    • State Fire Marshal copy
    • Fire Department copy
    • Suppression System Installer copy
    • Petroleum Marketing Company copy

    Plans must include:

    • Site plan
    • Extinguishing system plan review
    • Elevation and end views
    • Legend
    • Notes
    • Signature / approval from the fire department

    Plans must include the following statements:

    • Self-serve extinguishing systems shall be installed in accordance with the State Fire Marshal approved plans.
    • All extinguishing systems, dispensing systems, and control equipment shall be UL listed.
    • Plans containing credit card reading devices shall include the language from the State Fire Code - 527 CMR 1.00 Section 42.7.4.5 (1) (k).

     

  3. Approval Notification

    Following approval from the local fire department, the Division of Fire Safety will review the plans.

    If approved we will send approval letters to you and to the fire department where the station will be located. Once you receive the approval letter, the fire suppression company can begin installation.

    If the plans are not approved, they will be returned to you with a letter of explanation. Once the plans are corrected they may be resubmitted for review.

    Please be advised that plan reviews can take up to 2-3 weeks for review / approval.
