What is Cane Quest?
Cane Quest is a challenging, fun orientation and mobility contest for all students who use a white cane. Contestants are divided into three age categories – scouts, explorers, and trailblazers – and are asked to demonstrate fundamental orientation and mobility skills and travel techniques, such as sound localization, dropped objects, and proper human guide techniques.
- Showcase your Orientation & Mobility skills and travel techniques
- Navigate our exciting route, make new friends, and win cool prizes
- All contestants will be given instructions and earn points by using proper travel techniques, and they will be monitored at all times by trained volunteers.
WHY CANE QUEST IS IMPORTANT TO OUR COMMUNITY:
The event shines a spotlight on the importance of building successful white cane navigation skills in children and teens with visual impairments. Orientation & Mobility focuses on the ability of students to identify their surroundings and get from one location to another safely without the use of sight. Specific O&M skills include fundamental travel techniques and cane skills — sound localization, dropped objects, traffic light crossing, and vehicle detection.
