Rail Transit Safety Division

The Rail Transit Safety Division is responsible for overseeing the safety of equipment and operations of the MBTA. The Division performs random inspections of MBTA light and heavy rail subway cars and operation facilities which include all carhouses. The Division also conducts external safety audits which are designed to monitor compliance with program requirements. The Department is also the state agency with regulatory authority over all public rail crossings in Massachusetts.
