For more than a decade, the Commonwealth has supported urban agriculture producers with grant funding, technical assistance and state-wide conferences. Over $3.8 million has been invested in urban agriculture through MDAR’s Urban Agriculture Program. In total, 127 projects have been funded in 7 counties across the commonwealth for projects that increase access to fresh nutritious food, marketing, distribution and building productive green spaces in our state’s densely populated communities.

Boston Medical Center Rooftop Farms has two farm sites on the rooftops of the hospital system. The farms are part of our Nourishing Our Community initiative, born from BMC’s Preventive Food Pantry, the first hospital-based therapeutic pantry in the country. We also house a Teaching Kitchen where dietitians and nutritionists lead hands-on cooking classes. Our produce supports these programs and goes to the hospital kitchens, our summer farmers market, and Rosie’s Place, a women’s shelter around the corner. Together, our two rooftops produce about 10,000 pounds of food each year on less than a quarter acre. Power Plant Farm opened nine years ago, and Newmarket Farm, featured here, is in its third season.We grow over 40 varieties of organic crops from the staples like peppers, kale, and carrots, to culturally significant crops like callaloo, Malabar spinach, Tulsi, aji dulce peppers, and cranberry beans. In addition to growing food, we grow engagement and food systems education. We lead Gardening 101 workshops, K–12 camps, volunteer days, and patient programming on a variety of topics from seed to plate. Nordica Street Community Farm is a 1 acre hand scale no-till farm based in Springfield with a 25 member farm share/CSA and a neighborhood farm stand. Farm has faced multiple soil and pest challenges in its 5 year history. Participants will learn strategies for dealing with depleted sandy soil, dumped clay, and a traumatized forest edge, as well as a range of hungry critters and pests including rabbits, groundhogs, deer, problematic bugs, and spotted lanternfly. Farm owners Anne Richmond and Todd Crosset will share their experience, and will be joined by Sister Anna Muhammad, Food Sovereignty Director at Pocasset Pokanoket Land Trust and a market grower in Springfield, who has provided soil technical assistance and support to the farm over the years. Staff from UMass Extension and the American Farmland Trust will be offering free soil analysis for toxic metals using a portable x-ray fluorescence (pXRF) device. Please bring a soil sample if you want it to be tested for contamination! The results are for you only – they will not be shared with an outside agency or organization. Registration Required. The Food Project will focus our Urban Agriculture Week activities this year at the DSNI multicultural festival!
