Many of the wide carriage roads and rocky hilltop
trails of the Blue Hills Reservation are ideal for off-road cycling.
We invite you to pedal the trails of the Blue Hills but please remember
you are sharing these lands with hikers, runners, and equestrians.
Within the Blue Hills Reservation, the areas open
to mountain bicycling include the Great Blue Hill and Houghton's
Pond sections. Some trails within this area are closed to mountain
bicycling due to sensitivity of soils, slopes, habitat, and public
safety concerns. Please stay off the trails marked with the "No
Bicycle" signs. Respect and cooperation will insure that your use
of the trails does not spoil that of other trail users or spoil
the trails themselves. Slow down. Take your time and become aware
of the sights, sounds, and smells of the world around you. The Hills
have much to offer!
Please respect the following rules regarding mountain bicycles.
Ride

A number
of trails within this area are closed due to environmental and safety
concerns. Please be aware of trail closures. Trails closed to bicycles
will be marked with a "No Bicycle" sign.
Mountain bicycles are prohibited on trails between January 1
st and April 15. Notices of further changes will be posted
on bulletin boards and Reservation Headquarters at 695 Hillside
Street in Milton.
Control Your Bicycle
Ride responsibly. Maintain a safe speed at all times and exercise
caution on blind curves and steep slopes.
Always Yield Trail
Hikers and horseback riders have the right of way. When approaching
from the rear, slow down and announce your presence. Pass slowly
and safely.
Ride Safely
Always wear a helmet and consider wearing eye protection. Carry
a water bottle and a repair kit. Be familiar with your bicycle.
Know your limits.
Plan Ahead
Familiarize yourself with the trail map. Four-digit numbers
on this map correspond with white and black trail markers at trail
intersections. The contour lines depict elevation of the surrounding
area. Contour lines that are closer together represent a steeper
slope.
A special use permit is required for groups
of more than six riders.
Permits are available at Reservation Headquarters
Leave No Trace
Ride only on existing trails. Never create new trails including
short cuts and "turn-outs" around fallen logs, water bars,
and muddy areas. Ride through puddles rather than around them. Avoid
soft and wet trails.
When slowing, modulate brakes-both front and back to prevent skidding
and rutting of trails.
Your cooperation today determines the future of mountain biking
in the Blue Hills Reservation. Please help us protect this Reservation
while
enjoying this splendid resource.
