Window safety

How parents and caregivers can prevent window falls.

Falls from windows involving young children can cause serious injuries. Screens are not strong enough to protect children from falling out of windows.

Prevent window falls

To prevent window falls, parents and caregivers should:

  • Keep furniture – and anything a child can climb on – away from windows
  • Open windows from the top, not the bottom, when possible, and lock all unopened doors and windows. Keep the opening to less than 4 inches.
  • Be sure children are always supervised
  • Install quick-release window guards, which are available in most hardware stores. Bars on the guards should be 4 inches or less apart. (Look for window guards that say “ASTM F2090.”)
  • Install window stops, which can be added to the window frame to keep the window opening to 4 inches or less. Some new windows come with window stops already installed.
  • Practice removing window guards so you can escape in an emergency. Always be sure to reinstall the window guards after practicing.
